Winter Is Coming!
Is Your Rental Ready?
Cold weather shouldn't catch you or your roommates off guard. Here's your student-friendly winter rental checklist.
Canadian winters can be tough on rental properties. Before temperatures drop, take a few minutes to check your home, talk with your roommates and find out who handles winter maintenance.

🏠 Your Winter Rental Checklist
1. Check Your Heating
Don't wait for the first freezing night to discover your heat isn't working.
2. Look for Drafts
Cold air sneaking through windows and doors can make your rental uncomfortable and increase heating costs.
3. Know Your Winter Responsibilities
Snow and ice can quickly become a safety issue around rental properties.
4. Get Your Roommates on the Same Page
Winter is easier when everyone knows what they're responsible for.
🚨 5. Prepare for Winter Emergencies
What happens if your heating stops working during a cold snap?
Make sure everyone in your household knows:
- How to contact your landlord or property manager after hours.
- How to report a heating failure, water leak or other urgent repair.
- Where to find flashlights and essential supplies.
- What to do if the property becomes unsafe to occupy.
Safety reminder: Never use outdoor grills, camp stoves or other fuel-burning devices indoors for heating. They can cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
❄️ Ready for Winter?
You don't need to tackle everything in one afternoon.
Start with heating, check for drafts, clarify responsibilities and make sure you know who to call when something goes wrong.
A little preparation now can mean fewer surprises when winter arrives.
